As an aspiring growing-in-the-desert person, so far the biggest success has been beans. Delicious beans. But if you're thinking about starting, I am starting to have some success with tomatoes, peppers and lettuce and radishes from seed. And herbs, tons of herbs. I can't kill 'em.
Fair enough. That is when herbs on the kitchen windowsill become a way better option. That is the only place my African violet will survive, because I can always stick it in the sink if it looks sad. But I can see how Arizona in general isn't conducive to gardening, I remember being there in February and thinking it was too hot to be outside. Reno is apparently a much wussier breed of desert.

Herbs are good for the cat. He likes herbs. But I've given up gardening I think--I had trouble remembering to water even in Ohio!
