There's an excellent first person story of a novice attorney helping a couple negotiate the foreclosure/loan modification hoops in this article on Consumerist, but the real fun is in the comments. A few people point out that banks will own some very valuable property--not houses--in the rust belt states and seem to think they will hang on to it for a few decades to make a killing when global climate change, drought and the Great Lakes Water Compact make the area rich in resources again.
Having worked in a bank, I assure you bankers are just not that smart and creative.
