On The Library Job Market

I finally filled out a survey I got from my library school a few weeks ago that asked if I had a gotten a job. Yes, it did ask if it was a library job or outside the field and how much it paid. There was no option for "Yes, I have a library job (two in fact, both part-time) but neither comes with benefits, and what do you consider 'professional' anyway?" The results get reported to the ALA and heavens know they've got a vested interest in delusion.

What frustrates me about librarianship was how one could do everything "right" and still get the response of "you suck" not just from the hiring entities but from people who act as "advisors" in the field. I'm putting that in quotations because honestly there's little practical advice in that forum. And if the job field is so challenging to people doing high-profile work, really I don't think it's entitled or whining to ask what is wrong with the field.

Oh wait, it's me. I never think it's wrong to complain and point out flaw--just sometimes the wrong time to voice them.

Honestly though, when I see jobs like this, I can't help but think a) I dodged a bullet and b) the veil has got to fall sometime.
